DESIGNER OF THE MONTH: MARKUS HAALA

Lowell, MA - As the director of MHM Studios Printmaking, Markus Haala runs the Merrimack Valley’s only fine art printmaking studio. He is a design teacher and adjunct faculty at the Art Institute of Boston. Markus holds a BFA in printmaking from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Due to his background in art history, archaeology and digital media communication, his work is heavily inspired by scientific, artistic and historical research.

Markus’ work has been published and exhibited in several international exhibitions and can be found in international private collections as well as institutions such as the Museo Brasileiro da Escultura in São Paulo, Brazil or the Purdue University Print Archive in Indiana.


Markus' talent as a print maker, illustrator, designer, and teacher is undeniable. An integral part to the Design 4 Lowell Project, he shares a vision of designing a beautiful future for the city, for our network, and for his brand. His passion for this unique, vintage trade made him a standout when we first met at a Merrimack Valley Sandbox Pitch contest, one in which he won the grand prize!
